They say that the eyes are the window to the soul, so you know what you probably don’t want? Anything that comes with the word ‘toxic,’ anywhere near them! But how can some false lashes damage your eyes and what should you be looking out for?
We're here to help! We’ve pulled together everything you need to know to ensure you never have to worry when reaching for your favourite falsie. 👇
Yes! False lashes are made from a variety of different materials including plastic, synthetic silk and animal fur. You can check out our blog on cruelty-free products to understand why choosing something like synthetic silk helps to protect animals around the world, but whatever you choose, none of these materials contain toxins which would damage your natural lashes or your skin.
It’s not the lashes, it’s the glue. You see, two of the most common ways to enhance lashes require glues:
1) Lash extensions use something called cyanoacrylate which is the same adhesive that they use in Super Glue (!).
2) Glue-on falsies use a temporary adhesive.
And these glues can contain toxins which may hurt your eyes, skin or even your natural lashes.
Not all glues will cause damage, but many contain a whole host of nasties like parabens, formaldehyde, latex and sulphates.
Toxic lash glues can create a number of different problems:
Irritation – redness or itching of the skin or eyes
Inflammation – swelling or puffing around the eyes and eyelids
Contact dermatitis – an allergic reaction which can make the skin sore and red
Damage to hair follicles – leading to increased shedding
Cancer – this is an extreme example, but formaldehyde is classed by the US Environmental Protection Agency as a carcinogen
For stress-free application with the best possible protection, look for adhesive products with the ‘toxin-free’ sticker. These products have been specially formulated to be kind to your eyes and won't contain parabens, sulphates or harsh chemicals like formaldehyde.
