Can I use eyelash curlers?

Let’s be honest: for years curlers have looked like the sort of things that belong in a box of obscure dentists’ instruments. But they’re incredibly seductive. One touch of a curler and eyelashes come alive. Goodbye I-shouldn’t-have-gone-out-on-a-work-night fatigue and hello fresh-faced and bouncy.

But there’s always been that question: does this come at a price? Are curlers actually doing us more harm than good?

Frankly the whole thing was just making us anxious, and at Silly George we believe that beauty isn’t about the way you look, it’s all about the way you feel. So we thought it was time to banish the doubt and find out the answer.

Put your mind at ease and read on to find out how you can still get the curve you deserve without damaging your lashes.

Are they safe to use?

Yes. Curlers are designed to shape your lashes without damaging them, but a lot depends on how you use them. Luckily, there’s no need to employ a full-time curling expert who you can FaceTime every time you need a quick lift: we’ve got you covered.

How to curl like a pro

1) Curl naked

Naked lashes, that is. Mascara is a wonderful friend, but it’s better to use it to lock in your lift after you’ve used a curler rather than before. Applying mascara to your eyelashes before curling makes them both more brittle AND more likely to stick, which is when you start running the risk of getting a lash stuck or broken. So don’t be shy, keep those lashes bare!

2) Keep your curler squeaky clean

Bacteria is the enemy of strong, beautiful eyelashes. That’s why it’s so worth the extra few minutes it takes to clean your curler after use and let it dry thoroughly. Soap and water is all you need if you want to keep things simple, but alcohol-based cleaners will also work just as well.

3) Fresh pads

Make sure you regularly replace the pad on your curler so that it doesn’t wear out. This will help keep any pesky bacteria at bay and will also ensure that you get a perfect curl every time. Most brands make it easy for you to buy replacement pads, so there’s no harm in stocking up.

4) Don’t forget to reach for the stars

It sounds so simple, but sometimes it’s easy to forget that curling isn’t just about pressing those lashes, it’s also about a little bit of movement. Keep it gentle of course, but once you’ve pressed down, try to slowly work the curler upward. This will give your lashes instant lift and actually bed in that curl for longer.
