Why were fake eyelashes invented?

If eyelashes didn’t exist somebody would have still probably invented them. Why? Well, all through the ages women have known that drawing attention to their eyes enhances their beauty. Women in Rome for instance, used to paint on long lashes because they believed it indicated virtue. And the first cosmetic mascara was invented in the Victorian era by Queen Victoria's perfumer Eugene Rimmel. 

Although some sort of fake lashes had been around for decades it wasn’t until June 6, 1911, that they were officially patented by a Canadian inventor named Ann Taylor. And they have been with us in some shape or form ever since. They first became more mainstream after the release of the film ‘Intolerance’ with the actress Seena Owen wearing them. Then in the 40’s and 50’s with Rita Hayworth and Marilyn Monroe, moving into the swinging sixties with Twiggy. In the 70’s and 80’s they took a bit of a back seat but in the 90’s they were back for good!
